The Tie That Bonds

Chapter 18

Trowa kneeled in front of his boyfriend and lightly padded the wound with a damp piece of his own ripped shirt. The Japanese man cringed in pain at the contact. When the windshield of the Firebird shattered, it rained onto Heero, and a large shard had embedded itself into the flesh of his left arm. There were more injuries than that, but they weren't visible; which was a good thing for Mia's sake. Mia was sitting on a nearby stump, watching the two in fearful silence. She was still shaken by the scene of the accident.

After Heero had emerged from the wreck, the trio climbed the mountain side to enter a conveniently placed national park. As they were currently resting, the trees of the forest served as cover and protection. Once the wound was properly dressed, Heero pushed himself to his feet. He looked down at his lover with determination.

"We should keep moving."

"But Heero. . ."

"We don't have much distance between us and the scene. Staying will only make it easier for them to locate us." With that, the proud Japanese man started walking. Standing straight, Trowa motioned for Mia to come to him. Grasping her hand lightly, they followed Heero through the woods.

The next few days, they journeyed through the woods, stopping only to find food and eat. When Mia grew too tired to walk on her own, Trowa carried her. Though Heero had offered on several occasions, the Latin declined, figuring that Heero was using enough energy as it was to push himself to keep going.

Presently, Trowa and Mia were at a stream resting, while Heero insistently headed out to scout the area. The Latin watched the little girl as she stared at her reflection in the stream. There was no doubt that since they entered the forest, Heero had been more harsh and cold toward her than usual; and she was taking it harder too. Sensing that she needed comfort, Trowa pushed to his feet and walked over to the surrogate daughter. He kneeled next to the rock that she was sitting on and stared down at her reflection as well. All the while, she was twisting her fingers into the gold chain of her necklace.

"Are you okay Mia?"

"Does Heero hate me now?"

"No. Why would you think he hates you?"

"He's been meaner than usual."

"He's just upset. . .and his arm is causing a great deal of pain." The little girl looked up into the emerald eyes.

"Is this my fault?"

"It's not your fault."

"I want to go home."

"We can't go home."

"Why?"

"Because we're going to make a new home somewhere else."

"What was wrong with our old home?"

"The bad men know where we live now. If we go back there, they'll find us."

"But you and Heero said that there were no bad men. Why are there bad men now Trowa?" Tears spilled from the colbat eyes. For the first time, he wasn't sure what to tell the girl. Instead, he pulled her into a hug.

"It's going to be okay Mia. I promise you. Everything will be fine, but in order for it to be okay, you have to try to be strong." He pulled from her and lightly wiped her tears. "We can only get through this if we're strong."

"Like Heero?"

"Yeah. Like Heero. Can you do that?"

"I don't know, he's pretty strong. . .but I'll try."

"I'm sorry I didn't believe you about the bad men."

"Are they going to find us?"

"No. We're going to go someplace where they won't expect."

"Then things will go back to the way they were?" Trowa nodded. "What about Duo? And Hilde? Will they be okay?"

"They'll be just fine." At that moment, Heero appeared from the trees. Trowa looked up at his lover, and the emotionless colbat eyes told him that they were looking at another few days spent in the woods. He patted Mia's knee and stood. "Stay here, okay?"

"Okay." Though she was staring at the water again, her attention was with the two men.

"Maybe we should camp for the night. It's going to get dark soon." Trowa suggested as he approached his boyfriend.

"We should keep moving and get in as much ground as possible. They've probably figured that we're in here somewhere. We can't afford to waste time."

"Heero, we're exhausted. All of us. You and I haven't slept for a day now. How far can we get if we keep going like this?" Heero glared at his lover, knowing that there was more to it than Trowa was letting on. "You're hurt and I'm worried about you."

"I'll be fine. We need to keep moving. When we make it to town, steal a car, then we can rest. It's not safe staying here." They stared at each other a moment. "I'm fine." With that, he continued walking through the woods. Trowa called out to Mia, and holding the child's hand, followed his boyfriend.

The following afternoon, they emerged from the thicket to find a dirt road. Knowing that they couldn't very well remain in the woods, they followed it; heading north, to hopefully a town. Mia had fallen asleep in Trowa's arms as the sun started to set to their left. The extra load was causing his arms to grow numb, as it seemed that she was getting heavier with every step that he took.

Both men stopped dead in their tracks as they heard a vehicle approaching from behind. A green pick up truck was barreling down the road at normal speed. At first, the truck by passed them, before stopping several feet ahead. The truck died and a woman stepped from the driver's side.

"You fellas need a ride?" She asked helpfully. Trowa and Heero looked at each other in silent debating. It was possible that the woman could be working for the enemy. . .but as it stood, neither of them wanted to continue walking. Then again, if she was the enemy, she would have attacked by now, instead of offering friendly services. Considering their chances, they walked over to her, thanked her for the offer, and climbed into the open bed of the truck.

They sat with their backs resting against the club cab. Heero looked over at his lover, not to surprised by the worn expression concealing his green eyes. He pulled the taller closer to him and slipped his arms around the tired figure. Still holding Mia closely, Trowa relaxed against Heero's chest and allowed himself to lull off to slumber.

The Nevada borderline was only 30 miles away. Neither of the men were sure where they were heading; all they knew was that they would know when they got there. The options right now were either staying in the United States, or heading to either Canada or Mexico. The only problem with leaving the country would be the borderline checks. If the enemy was advanced enough to nearly trap them on a Colony, and track them all the way to California, there was little doubt that they didn't have allies posted at the borderlines waiting for them. . .so as for now, the options have slimed again.

Trowa raise and looked back at Amelia, who was still sleeping on the back seat. Seeing that she was fine, he turned back around and slumped further into the seat. Heero kept his blood shot eyes to the road as he had all morning. Though Trowa had offered to take over, the Japanese man had declined. Trowa looked in his mirror at the empty desert road behind them. He could feel Heero's tension. It was a lot worse this time around than when they first had fled. Turning his green eyes back to his partner, he thought of some way to lighten the situation.

Removing his seat belt, he slid closer to the stronger man. Wordlessly, he began placing light kisses along his neck. Heero closed his eyes for a brief second as he enjoyed the touch. While the lips teased his neck, Trowa's hand started rubbing the front of his jeans.

"What about Mia?"

"She's sleeping." Trowa whispered and unzipped the front of the blue jeans. His hand buried itself inside and pulled out the aroused manhood.

"If she wakes up?"

"I'll stop." He assured before turning his attention else where. Heero slumped into his seat. He tried to focus on the road, but it was a little tough with Trowa's tongue taunting and teasing the tip of his erection in just the right way. Breathing heavily, he ran his fingers through his lover's hair. Remembering that Amelia was in the back seat, he adjusted his rear view mirror so that he would be able to see her as well as the road behind him. While he did this, he failed to notice the police car parked behind a road sign. It wasn't until he glanced in his side mirror that he noticed the squad car.

"Shit." Trowa stopped and fixed his jeans, thinking that Amelia was awake. As he looked back to check on her, he wasn't too happy to notice the cause of Heero's outburst. There was no doubt that the cops were running their license plate. Trowa sat back in his seat and watched the car in his side mirror. All at once, the lights were turned on as well as the siren.

"What's going on?" Mia asked as she sat up in the back seat rubbing her eyes. They couldn't stop for the police, so Heero did the only thing they could. . .he slammed his foot on the gas petal. Thankfully the car that they stole was a muscle car that could withstand the speed Heero was forcing into it. Trowa turned around to face Mia.

"Buckle up." This time, she only needed to be told once.

"Is that the cops Trowa?" She asked as she heard the sirens. "Why are we running from the cops?" Both men searched the area, looking for a way to lose the police. They probably already had back up coming.

"This is the police. Pull your vehicle to the side of the road." One of the officer's voices could be heard over the loud speaker in their car. "I repeat. This is the police. Pull your vehicle to the side of the road."

Another set of sirens was added to the squad car behind them. This one belonged to a rail road crossing that they were approaching fast. At the same time, a train was seeking to cross. Heero pushed the gas petal straight to the floor. If luck was on their side, they could make it before the train would cross.

"Heero, stop. We won't make it." Trowa stated, a little edgy at the fact that the call was too close. "HEERO!"

"We will." Was all the Japanese man said as a determined look crossed his face. Trowa looked back at Mia, the little girl was scared out of her mind as she saw the huge train charging straight at them.

The child screamed and covered her face as Heero swerved off the road a little, and crossed the tracks with only inches to spare. Once on the other side of the train, he stopped the car. One look at Trowa was enough to tell him the new plan. They both got out of the car, and Heero snatched Mia from the back.

"Hang on to me." He told the child as he and Trowa stood behind the car, waiting for the perfect time. Clinging tightly, Mia buried her face into Heero's chest. Once the train finished passing, the officers on the other side were a little surprised to find that the car was still sitting in the middle of the road. Curious, they drew their guns and climbed out of the squad car. Ever so cautiously, they advanced toward the stalled car to investigate. To their surprise, it was abandoned. The officers then looked around the area, wondering where they had run to. Aside from the caboose of the train, all that was visible was desert.

"You don't think they. . .?" The younger of the two cops asked as they watched the retreating train.

"It was moving too fast. They couldn't have. . .could they?"
